Developing Great Logos for Your Marketing Needs
Developing great logos for your marketing needs means developing logos that meet a number of basic requirements:
1) Originality. Whether your web site or company is interested in selling widgets or in providing services that help new immigrants deal with INS issues, you need a logo that is original. In fact, having a logo that is too close to that of a competitor or other business could see you sued for copyright infringement. Keep in mind that logos are trademarked entities, so having a unique logo is a must. As well, since your business is unique, you want that uniqueness reflected in a fresh, new logo.
2) Simplicity. You will likely be using your logo across all your marketing materials, including posters, websites, advertisements, catalogues, business cards, brochures, stationery, and more. Having a very complex logo with numerous colors can dramatically increase your printing costs when it comes to hard copy advertising materials. As well, research has suggested that overly complex logos are not as recognizable or memorable as a simpler logos for most customers. Think of the Nike swoosh – one of the simplest and most successful logos in recent memory. Simplicity is something that customers respond to well. Look for a logo that uses a few primary colors and simple shapes or lines.
3) Relevance. If you are a service offering help with INS forms, it may be confusing to your customers if your logo is of a giant apple. Similarly, if you’re in the business of selling running shoes, a logo with a worm might be confusing. While sometimes strange logos do work, it is rare. Where possible, choose a logo that fits your industry or your company closely. Where this is not possible, choose an abstract and simple logo that could represent a number of things.
4) Easy to remember logo elements. Ideally, your logo should be very easy to remember. You want customers to start recognizing your logo as you start building your brand image. Having a simple logo really helps with this, as does having a relevant logo. Beyond that, however, you need to design a logo that is catchy, and therefore easy to remember. A logo that incorporates your company name, initials, or that really captures the essence of your company is important. Whether you are offering a service to help people fill of green card renewal forms or whether you are selling doughnuts, you need to have a logo that customers will respond to and will remember. After all, you want customers coming back again and again. A logo that is not memorable and not appealing will not help you build your business brand. It is often a good idea to test out different logos to see which one sticks in customers’ minds the longest. That is likely the logo you want.
